        1. Implementing a new model of Romanization

The methodological investigations undertaken during the first months of project aimed the completion of the bibliographic support on the basis of theoretical historiographical analysis. The goal was to define and deepen the new historiographical trends on the key concepts and phenomena (Romanization, alterity, acculturation, identity, creolization, crossbreeding) in German, Anglo-Saxon and Francophone historiography. It was also conceived a comprehensive bibliographic data base on the meaning and application of these concepts in the areas of interest for our project: Italy, Hispania, the Lower Danube provinces and the Greek East. There were made for this purpose visits to institutions within Romania (History Museum of Roman and History Museum of Bîrlad), as well as documentary short internships in foreign specialized scientific institutions (Konstanz University, University of Salerno, University of Warsaw, Institute of Archaeology of Warsaw, University of Trier, and the German Archaeological Institute of Berlin and Munich).

       2. Identification of the defining elements for the Roman civilization from linguistic, religious, economic, military perspective)

Dr. Lucian Munteanu has completed a period of research at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Polish Academy of Sciences. On this occasion, there were completed bibliographic information on economic and monetary aspects of Romanization within the Rhine and Danube provinces. There were laid the foundations of cooperation in the field of monetary circulation in the territories of Barbaricum, in the limes area. The bibliographic research conducted at the University of Trier (dr. Iulia Dumitrache) aimed primarily provincial social and economic aspects in the Rhine provinces of Gallia Belgica and Germania Superior being located, as well as the areas of interest in the project, on the limes, and representing strong buffer areas between “Romanitas” and “Barbaricum”. The documentation stage taken in Salerno (dr. Roxana-Gabriela Curcă) had as main objective the establishment of a bibliographic database on the idea of Romanization in the Italian Peninsula, with particular regard to its linguistic aspects. Dr. Florian Matei-Popescu (DAI Munich) followed the integrative role of the Roman army in imperial and provincial context. Research on the religious aspects of Romanization (dr. A. Rubel) showed differences in personal piety and collective piety in the Roman world.
